Muffin Tin Monday---Chicka chicka boom boom theme

Muffin Tin Monday at Her Cup Overfloweth I am trying my second week of Muffin Tin Mondays. This weeks theme is supposed to be clowns, but they give me the "heebidy-jeebidys". We have been reading Chicka chicka boom boom, so I decided to go with the palm tree & alphabet theme. I made the classic palm tree with celery and peanut butter and cocoa puffs for coconuts. He wanted a hot dog (although that wasn't the original plan), but I made it look sort-of like a coconut tree, grapes for more coconuts and chips for palm leaves (use your imagination Luke...). As you can see the alphabet was not incorporated...I was extremely sick this weekend and didn't get to the store to buy the alpha-bits cereal I was going to use...oh well!

Update: he ate everything except the celery palm tree...humph! Anyway, I've been told by childhood nutrition experts that my job as a mother is to put it on his plate, his job is to choose to eat it or not. He might not eat it the 1st time or the 20th time, but eventually he might! I worked with salad, so maybe celery will be next. See you next week for another Muffin Tin Monday.

Stomach Bug

We've been fighting the stomach bug the last 5 days. Youngest had it first, it lasted about 12 hours, and luckily he felt well enough to go to school the next day. I got it Friday and I spent 18 hours in bed trying to get over it...finally felt well enough to get up and take a shower about 24 hours after it began. In that time my Husband and Oldest cooked...and left the dishes for me the next day, along with the wet laundry that I hadn't gotten finished or the dessert I had sitting on the counter to finish steps 2 and 3. Husband caught the bug in the middle of the night, so he's recuperating on the couch this afternoon, luckily he should be fine to go to work tomorrow. The only one yet to have it is Oldest...and he doesn't have time between school, scouts, band, football and baseball...no time at all!

Oldest and I did go to the party store today to pick up some party supplies for my Youngest's birthday party scheduled this next weekend. I can't believe my baby is going to be 5! We're going with a Star Wars theme, and I'm mixing them up a little: Classic star wars and the Clone wars. He's going to have fun. Taking cupcakes to his class on Friday and Family over on Sunday for cake and ice-cream. Still not quiet sure what we're going to get him for a gift. I'm thinking Lego Star Wars for the Wii.

Join Scout Night

We had our Pack's Join Scout Night last night and boy did we have a turn-out! This event is for brand-new boys, not boys already registered with the Pack and we had 30+ boys show up last night. If most of them sign up that would put our Pack at between 55-65 boys. Half of the new boys would be Tigers (1st graders, the level I'm helping with this year until they get established)! That is not counting the 3 already signed up, so we're looking at almost 20 boys.

At the moment they would have to be 1 den, but if we can find some strong leadership with the parents of these boys, our goal is to divide them into 2 dens (a more manageable #). I found that I need to review my Tiger stuff...I had a few problems remembering what was in the Tiger book (I forgot to bring mine), I haven't had to study it in 5 yrs, when my Oldest went through. I had the Webelos book practically memorized last year.

Anyway it looks to be a great Scouting year. I'm glad there is so much interest in the Scouting program (boys and girls) since I believe it is one of the best programs out there for children to be a part of. I was a Girl Scout growing up and it has made me a more confident person.

Too Busy this Fall!

This family cannot just sit at home and do nothing in the Fall! I've actually allowed my husband and Oldest to do something I swore we would never do: Play 2 sports at one time! My Oldest has been begging to play Football for years, and this year since I have less responsibilities in the evenings agreed. He went in last night and picked up his pads and helmet and met his coach and the 23 other boys on his team. He starts practice on Tuesday.

My Oldest is also into Baseball...and so is my Husband! He couldn't stand our Oldest not playing Fall Baseball this year, so he called up the Coach and practice started yesterday at 6:30. He didn't really have to talk my Oldest into doing baseball too, we've been watching the Little League World series and he's been excited about baseball the last couple of weeks.

So Tuesdays and Thursdays will go something like this: 5:30-7:30 Football practice, and 6:30-8:30 Baseball Practice! He will be leaving one early and getting to the other late so he can practice! I'm stocking up on granola bars and Gatorade so he can have a pick-me-up snack in between practices. Plus he has Scouts on Monday nights and he has to practice his oboe 15-20 minutes every day and homework!

Once games start, baseball games will probably be on Tues and Thurs and football games will be on Sundays and possibly Thurs, so we will be running! Plus I take my Youngest to gymnastics once a week! Can you say tired!

MTM Update

Well I got the boys' opinion on the "fun food" they had for lunch yesterday..."It was SO COOL, MOM!" Even my 11 year old, who's in middle-school enjoyed eating his surprise lunch. The cheese stick pencils received 2 thumbs up from both boys while the dried apricot fish received 2 thumbs down from both boys, but had their father asking why he didn't get any fish in his lunch. They haven't had bologna in their lunches in a long time so they were all happy with those, and they've never had bugles, so they were very happy with that choice.

I'm trying to decide if I will go with the clown theme for next week (I don't like clowns) or a theme of my choosing. You'll have to wait and see! Happy Tuesday!

Muffin Tin Monday: 1st Day of School Theme

Muffin Tin Monday at Her Cup Overfloweth When I read about this on another blog I thought it was the cutest idea and it would be fun to do with my almost 5 year old. This is my first Muffin Tin Monday and I did a 1st Day of School theme since my little dude just started Pre-K. I included 1/2 a bologna sandwich, juice, bugles, a cheese stick pencil and an apricot school of fish.
This is him enjoying his meal. He thought it was "awesome Mom" so I'm happy I tried it at least.

Birthday Theme Ideas?

My Youngest son is going to have his 5th birthday in 2 weeks and he wants a Star Wars theme. I want to do the theme on my own, but I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do! Help! Cake ideas---none at the moment. Present ideas---Lego's Batman or Lego's Indiana Jones for the DS. Decoration ideas---I haven't been to the party store yet, but I'm sure they will have something. It's that cake that's giving me nightmares! I can't believe my baby is going to be 5! I also want to make something easy like rice krispie treats for his pre-k class, but I've got to ask his teacher if that will be okay.

My husband celebrates his birthday the same weekend, but we've pretty much worked out that I'm going to buy him a motorcycle jacket so he can ride his motorcycle late into the fall.

My Oldest has a birthday in November and he has yet to settle on a theme either. He's going to be 12 and tends to like things like laser-tag or the batting cages for his party. He also wants his friends at his parties instead of just family like my youngest.

Walking Again

I've started walking again. I used to walk my Oldest to school with my Youngest in the stroller and then Youngest and I would walk about 2 miles around a nearby park. I lost almost 20 lbs. doing that, but then winter came and my Youngest wouldn't sit in the stroller anymore so I haven't walked in 2 yrs.

Yesterday I walked my Youngest to school and then my Oldest and I took a walk around the same nearby park. Of course the two of us only finished about a mile and then we had to hoof it back home to get Oldest off to Middle School, but it's a start. My calf's were killing me when I got home, but we both had a good time. We don't get a lot of alone time and being able to spend 45 minutes alone with him in the morning is going to be good for both of us. His younger brother has taken a lot of my attention in the last couple of years, so I am happy with this development!

Well I'm off to buy some more accessories for my Oldest's Scout Uniform! Hopefully I'll get out of the scout shop without spending a large sum of money!

1st Day of School 2009

Aren't they handsome boys?
Coolest kid in school!

He's growing up too quickly!
Circle Time on the 1st Day of School.

Unfortunately his Older Brother wouldn't let me take an individual picture at his school. He jumped out of the car so fast and zoomed into the Gym, I thought something was after him!

Grandma Arrives Today!

My Grandmother and Uncle are flying in today from North Dakota and I'm super excited! I haven't seen them in 3 years and I've missed my Grandma dearly. Her health has been declining lately and the Family has decided that she cannot live alone anymore, but she is still lively enough not to need a Nursing Home, so we're trying to convince her to move in with my Mom. Mom is a retired nurse and her house would the perfect spot for Grandma to live. We just need to convince her of this.

She used to come down in the winters when my Youngest was a toddler and we had a lot of fun together. I would take her shopping and once a week the three of us would go out to eat lunch. She still has fond memories of her "Sweet-pea" although we've been trying to warn her he is now 3 weeks shy of 5 and our "Wild-man" not her "Sweet-pea" anymore. She won't believe us!

Tonight it's chili and cornbread and brownies at Mom's house to say hi. Have to be home early enough though to get my Youngest his bath. Tomorrow is his first day of Pre-K! Milestones...milestones...milestones...this is the year for them. My Oldest starts Middle School tomorrow too!

Left Brain or Right Brain?

Took a test online today on whether I am a left brain or right brain sort of person. These are the results:

Your Brain Usage Profile:
Auditory : 37% Visual : 62% Left : 57% Right : 42%

You are somewhat left-hemisphere dominant and show a preference for visual learning, although not extreme in either characteristic. You probably tend to do most things in moderation, but not always.

Your left-hemisphere dominance implies that your learning style is organized and structured, detail oriented and logical. Your visual preference, though, has you seeking stimulation and multiple data. Such an outlook can overwhelm structure and logic and create an almost continuous state of uncertainty and agitation. You may well suffer a feeling of continually trying to "catch up" with yourself.

Your tendency to be organized and logical and attend to details is reasonably well-established which should afford you success regardless of your chosen field of endeavor. You can "size up" situations and take in information rapidly. However, you must then subject that data to being classified and organized which causes you to "lose touch" with the immediacy of the problem.

Your logical and methodical nature hamper you in this regard though in the long run it may work to your advantage since you "learn from experience" and can go through the process more rapidly on subsequent occasions.

You remain predominantly functional in your orientation and practical. Abstraction and theory are secondary to application. In keeping with this, you focus on details until they manifest themselves in a unique pattern and only then work with the "larger whole."
With regards to your career choices, you have a mentality that would be good as a scientist, coach, athlete, design consultant, or an engineering technician. You can "see where you want to go" and even be able to "tell yourself," but find that you are "fighting yourself" at the darndest times.

My Front Flower Gardens

Sometimes I wish we would sell our TV!

Sometimes I wish we would sell our TV! But then I ask myself "Are you crazy?" The TV always seems to be on at our house and I'm getting tired of hearing it in the background, not to mention that the boys are watching way too many cartoons through out the day! This house is never quiet anymore...I think that is one reason I'm looking forward to school beginning next week with an eager gaze! I will have 2 hrs of quiet in the house daily, a time to dwell on and order all the thoughts in my head instead of feeling so scattered all the time.

Of course the TV keeps them occupied and not in my face asking "Mom, can I...?" or "Mom, will you...?" or "MOMMMMMMM!", which seems to always happen when the TV is off. Sometimes I wish we followed the old adage..."Children should be seen and not heard!" in this house and I might not feel so worn out all the time. Now don't get me wrong, they're great kids, they love me and each other and enjoy playing, but my house is tiny! and even normal sounds start echoing in my head.

Oh well...at least we're happy and they love me whether I'm scattered brained or not!

I feel productive.

I feel productive. My yard is mowed and weed-eated. My flower gardens are weeded and a few trees have been pruned. I've cleaned out the dining room, my bedroom, and my son's room. The bedrooms have been re-arranged, and I've vacuumed under and behind all of the furniture. The house is dusted, vacuumed, swept, moped, and cleaned. I've registered both of my boys at their respective schools, and went clothes shopping and shopping for school supplies. I've signed my oldest up for football, and my youngest up for gymnastics and I've attended my meetings for boy scouts, cub scouts, and MOMS group. All in the last 3 weeks, but of course I didn't do it all alone (I can never seem to clean my house without a lot of prodding).

I hired the yard out to my younger brother and gave him some spending money, my Mom (who doesn't know how to sit still, and is very active at my house now that she is retired and has finished working her house over) got me in the gardens for weeding. She also helped with the dusting, and re-arranging along with another girl friend (I plan on going helping clean her house in the future), and my husband hauled me off to the store to do the dreaded shopping (actually I love shopping, but not spending money...if I can't spend money, I won't shop :-(.

Now if I can just keep up with the up-keep, I'll be happy!

Shopping and a Movie

Spent the weekend shopping and at the Dollar Theatre with my boys. Our city has a no tax weekend in preparation for school and since I always buy a new outfit for my Oldest I thought I would hit the stores this weekend (although this really was mostly my husbands idea...I HATE shopping!). I also have 2 boys going to school this year and so 2 new outfits to buy, I can't believe both boys will be in school this year.

We went to Kohl's Friday night. Found all their clothes for at least 40% off. Bought my youngest 2 pairs of pants, my oldest a nice shirt, and my husband new shoes. We also had a 15% off coupon, so that kept costs reasonable. Jumped over to Target after Kohls and picked up 3 pair of jeans for my Oldest, 2 nice polo type shirts for my youngest (one with pirates skull and crossbones on them, which is a favorite of his right now...although maybe not appropriate for Pre-K), shoes for my youngest, and underwear for my husband.

My Oldest son spent the morning at his new Middle school Saturday and meet his Advisory teacher and many of his new classmates. Afterwards we didn't want to go home, so we went to the mall to peruse Old Navy. Their clearance shelves were empty and the line half-way around the store. That was the end to our clothes shopping. We hit GameStop and bought my Youngest the Lego StarWars Game to play on his Brothers DS and then decided to hit the dollar movies.

We went and saw Night at the Museum, Battle of the Smithsonian at the dollar theatre. I don't know why they call it the dollar theatre when the movies are $2 each now. It was a decent movie with a lot of adult humor. My boys laughed a lot and really enjoyed it, although we spent more money on the popcorn and drinks then on the movie.

It was a good and busy weekend.

Middle School...Here He Comes!

It's official, my Oldest is now enrolled in Middle School. We went in today and signed up for school lunches, bought a yearbook, joined the PTA, bought a school shirt, and got his class schedule. He gets to take 6th grade science, language arts, social studies, and 6th grade math extension along with intro to computers and band. The intro to computers is only a 9 week class and will be switched each nine weeks with speech/drama, then Leadership, then Spanish class. I'm happy with this schedule.

I also signed up my Youngest in Pre-K this week. He went into the school and told them he was there to begin school. He also went into the middle school today and introduced himself to everyone! I DO NOT have shy boys! (Which believe me is a relief since I've gone through life on the shy side).

I also signed up my Oldest for tackle football yesterday so that should be starting at any time. Games will be Sunday afternoons and possibly Thursday evenings. Looks like my roll in Cub Scouts this year will be limited to only the Pack Mtgs. I have to go to them since I'm the Advancement Chair, but that's okay...I need to back off on Scouts for a while and concentrate on other things at the moment.

All in all a productive week!

Took the boys by the hand today!

Took the boys by the hand today and we cleaned out and re-arranged their pig-pen (I mean room...which they share and collects everything!). We moved furniture and cleaned behind things...straightened out the bookshelves and vacuumed everywhere, just to find that we are still not done after three hours, after which I came crawling out of their room exhausted and with a sore back!

I still need to dive into their toy box and under their bed and start chucking toys out the door. I'm going to wait though until school starts and the boys won't know what they're losing. Do you all have that problem?...You start cleaning and they see a toy they haven't played with in months or years, but when you get ready to chuck it, it's their favorite toy ever?

The question I keep asking myself is "Why did you wait until August to clean their room and soon my own, when I've had all summer to do it?" Well I worked on the house today, tomorrow it's meetings...MOMS business meeting in the morning and Pack Leader's Mtg. tomorrow night. In between I need to start chucking things out from under my bed...(I have a friend coming over on Thursday to re-arrange my room!), but I'm not looking forward to more back breaking work!
